Teenager behind kindness project

A TEENAGER was the catalyst behind bringing a national christian project to St Albans.

Hope 2008, a nationwide initiative to offer random acts of kindness to the public is underway.

The inspirational project has brought Christian churches from across the district together to carry out community deeds.

Since the launch on Saturday in Civic Close, St Albans, around 60 volunteers have already entertained children in Verulamium Park, given out free fruit in the city centre and provided clubbers with water at Batchwood Hall Night Club at closing time.

It is all thanks to Sam Follett, 18, an A-Level student at St George's School and member of Christ Church in High Oaks, St Albans, who heard about the programme at a Christian festival.

Mum, Jacquie Follett, said: "Sam found out about the project and was really excited about it starting it up in St Albans. But with his A-Levels we decided it would be better if I launch it and he helps out where he can, but it was all his idea.

"We're a little late in starting up but we hope to carry out the project for a year, and even further actually. We hope church members can serve their neighbours and spread the Christian message of hope, unity and good news."

As well as publicising the project to the public, the launch also helped the committee to spread the word to other churches in the district who are not yet involved.

This month the volunteers will take part in a Works Weekend which will include painting and decorating at St Albans City Hospital and The Grove House Hospice.

Anyone can take part in the project, whether you are Christian or not. Visit www.hopestalbans.org for more information.
