HERTFORDSHIRE farmers and landowners may soon find it easier to deposit fly-tipped waste at their local tips.
Defra minister Joan Ruddock agreed to a Country Land and Business Association (CLA) request to consider how it could be made easier for landowners to dispose of other people's rubbish tipped on their land.
Hertfordshire CLA regional surveyor Jane Burch said: "We certainly have a long way to go, but this is a start.
"At the moment when rubbish is tipped on private land its disposal becomes the responsibility of the owner of that land. This is even the case with hazardous waste which has to be cleared by specialists at huge costs to the landowner."
The CLA will be continuing to lobby Government to act on the problem of hazardous waste and to investigate allegations of fly-tipping.
