Fundraiser stages dramatic rescue

Liz Arendt with Squirrel Liz Arendt with Squirrel

A DEAF woman leapt into a lake as part of a staged rescue, in a novel new way to raise money for charity.

Liz Arendt, Chairman of the Hertfordshire Branch of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, was taking part in a sponsored 'Newfie Rescue', where 40 volunteers took on the role of 'drowning swimmers' to be saved by a team of rescue dogs.

She was taken out to the middle of a vast lake in Aylesbury, by lifeguards, before throwing herself overboard.

The boat sped away, only to return a few minutes later with a huge black newfoundland dog called Squirrel.

Leaping into the water the 13 stone hound swam over to Liz who grabbed his harness and was gently pulled to safety.

After drying off Liz said: "Squirrel did not have the traditional barrel of brandy round his neck but he did allow me to fling my arms around him to get warm. It was a truly wonderful sight to watch these dogs fling themselves with such enthusiasm into the water to perform their rescues."

So far Liz has raised over £900 but she is hoping to reach £1000, which is the total needed to sponsor a puppy den at the Hearing Dog Training centre for a year.

If you would like to sponsor Liz, please send your donation to Liz Arendt, 1 Enid Close, Bricket Wood, St Albans, Herts AL2 3EL.

Cheques should be made payable to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
