Fence stolen for third time

FOR the third time in three years a special school in Redbourn has had fencing stolen from its playing field.

The fence in St Luke’s school in Crouch Hall Lane, Redbourn, borders a public right of way and ensures the safety of its students many which have moderate learning difficulties and other complex needs.

School Manager Helen Harding said: “I am surprised and disappointed that anyone would steal a section of mesh fencing, yet this has now happened three times.”

“This mindless act of theft is putting our children at risk. Without the fencing they could leave the premises, with the immediate danger of the M1 very close by.”

Ms Harding says the school’s insurance will not cover the replacement of the fencing which will cost around £500 to replace.

The school has also suffered a series of vandal attacks during the holidays when windows were smashed.

“Needless vandalism of this kind is resulting in the school having to divert monies which would otherwise be spent directly on educational resources,” added Ms Harding.

Hertfordshire police are aware of the problem and a Community Support Officer will patrol the site on a regular basis.
