THE county council has responded to the revelation that Hertfordshire teachers are taking thousands of days off sick every year.

Spokeswoman Jo Brown said: "The sickness rate among Hertfordshire teachers from April 2007 to March 2008 is 4.8 days. This figure is the average number of days per teacher of sickness absence in the year.

"Not only is this rate below the national average for teachers (5.4 days), but it is also below the national average of private sector sick days (5.8 days)."

The Review revealed yesterday that in 2007, Hertfordshire teachers took 64,400 days off, costing well over £6 million in pay for supply teachers.
