MORE than 600 plastic ducks raced down the River Lea in Batford yesterday.

Organised by The Marquess of Granby pub, the event, which has become a Harpenden tradition over the last 25 years, raised nearly £1,000 for guide dogs and breast cancer research, attracting hundreds of spectators and competitors, esach proudly sponsoring a duck.

Landlord Brian Smith told the Review: "We have the capacity to launch 1,000 ducks.

"Prizes go to the first three - the winner was someone called Emma C. We've got her phone number so I'll let her know later.

"It is always great fun and raises money for some very good causes."

Where were the Health and Safety police? A "race" with 600 yellow plastic ducks crowding one of our precious waterways? All those people risking their lives and damaging the riverbanks, gambling in a public place. I can't belive this was allowed, it should have been BANANA'd (Ban Anything Near Anyone Near Anywhere).
