Affordable housing project complete

THE affordable housing project in lemsford Road, Hatfield almost killed stone dead by a ferocious blaze which tore through the site, has been completed.

The block containing 84 affordable flats under construction was completely destroyed by a suspicious fire in August 2007.

A site clean up took place a week after the blaze and work on the scheme, designed to improve the long-term development of Hatfield town centre, continued soon after.

In total the development, backed by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, boasts 46 flats for both rent and shared ownership.

Currently 40 of the 46 rental properties are occupied with the rest in the process of being let. Viewings are taking place for the 10 key worker flats and the first completions on the shared ownership accommodation are expected by early February.

Councillor Roger Trigg, cabinet member for housing, said: " “We are delighted to have completed this project and to have the homes let so quickly. This mix reflects the local housing need and offers a great opportunity for those looking to get on the housing ladder.

"The housing is of a very high standard, energy efficient and in a prime location for the town centre.”
