THE district council's handling of the city centre cinema project has been slammed by Labour leader Roma Mills.
She told the Review: “This is hugely disappointing.
“Ever since 1995, when the Odeon in London Road closed, the one thing the young people of St Albans have been asking for is a cinema.
“It is the only aspect of local politics which holds any interest at all for my daughter, and I am sure other children and young people feel exactly the same.
“I have been asking about this since the autumn, because it didn't seem to be going anywhere.
“I know older people had concerns about the design and style of the building, but young people just want somewhere to watch films – there is very little for them to do in St Albans
“The Lib Dems have been promising a cinema ever since they were elected in 2004 – I don' t know how much money has been spent, but it has been an absolute waste of time.
“It leaves a very sour taste in the mouth.
"I know we are in a credit crunch- but St Albans is a very affluent area.
"The developers of Hertfordshire House obviously think they can make money out of selling flats in a major new city centre building, so why not a cinema?"
