First an apology for not writing anything sooner, but as you may expect, this time of year is fraught with coursework deadlines, exam revision and job hunting for those expecting to graduate this summer. As one of those students, I have been considering the job market in recent weeks and like many others, have realised that sticking around at uni may not be a bad idea – if you can afford it.
There is a good deal of funding available to students who wish to study at Masters level and beyond - not the same government type funding available to undergraduates, and not loans – but research councils and universities offer studentships to successful candidates which is basically payment to undertake your research at a particular institution. This means that the research proposal not only has to be viable and interesting, but worth investing in. So this past week I have been frantically coming up with an interesting, investable research proposal for Queen Mary’s in London, with the guidance of my tutor despite the 11th – hour rush I was in. My housemates are jealous; it would appear that other schools do not have tutors as dedicated or willing to help.
Proposal submitted, I just have to wait and see now, whilst contemplating a foray into the Guardian jobs pages once more...
