St Albans Ladies Circle crowned winners at national awards

A GROUP of St Albans women dedicated to fundraising for good causes scooped two national awards at the weekend.

Members of St Albans Ladies Circle are celebrating this week after winning two titles at the annual conference of the National Association of Ladies Circles.

The team picked up the coveted membership award, for the most number of new members joining the club – with 15 women joining in one year.

Chairman of the St Albans club, Marianne Jordan, also scooped the Anthony Nolan Trophy for the best individual circler and was recognised for doing the best job of promoting Ladies Circle.

The 36-year-old said: “I am delighted to receive both awards. It is great news not only for the club but for everyone in St Albans because as a larger club we will be able to do so much more for the local community.

“In the past year we have raised more than £2,000 for charities including Children's Heart Federation and Project SARIS – promoting literacy for young girls in India.”

This year, the St Albans women have chosen to support Earthwork St Albans, a registered charity based in Hixberry Lane which offers mental health sufferers and those with learning difficulties, work experience and training in horticultural skills.

Ladies Circle, the sister organisation of Round Table, has seven branches in Hertfordshire including Harpenden and Welwyn Garden City.

St Albans Circle was launched in June 2008 with just three members, and has grown to 18, as of the end of April this year.
