ROMA MILLS, St Albans Labour leader and parliamentary candidate, has attacked cabinet ministers who have deserted the Government and insisted she is fully behind Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
She told the Review: “It is an irresponsible indulgence. These people seem to putting their own interests before those of the party and the country.
“Some of them are quite right to resign because of the question marks over their expenses, but the manner of doing it, in the middle of very important elections, is inexplicable.
“We are in a deep recession, with lots of people losing their jobs and even their homes.
“Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling are doing their best to get us out of it and there are signs they are starting to succeed.
“The next General Election doesn't have to be held for nearly a year – there may have been quite a considerable recovery by then.
“A leadership election now would just be a distraction, giving the impression we are more interested in ourselves than in the problems facing ordinary people.
“These resignations make ordinary members and local councillors like me, who work hard for the party at county and district level all year long, pretty sick.”
This week the Prime Minister has been confronted with the resignations of Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, Communities Secretary Hazel Blear, Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell, and defence minister John Hutton.
While the latter insists he is stepping down for personal reasons and fully supports the Prime Minister, Ms Blears failed to give a reason and Mr Purnell openly called on Mr Brown to step aside to avoid defeat by the Conservatives.
