A SUICIDAL MAN threatening to jump off a gantry on to the M1 motorway has relented after nearly six hours, offering hope to motorists that traffic will ease for the evening rush hour.

The man climbed up the overhead sign gantry, between junctions six (Bricket Wood) and seven (Hemel Hempstead), at around 11.30am causing traffic mayhem for miles around.

Professional negotiators and emergency services have been at the scene most of the day trying to coax the man down with little success.

But ambulance spokesman Gary Sanderson has just told the Review the man has returned to the ground safe.

The Highways Agency are hoping to re-open all roads as soon as possible.
