PUPILS from Loreto College in St Albans met an inspirational young woman who has triumphed over devastating health problems this week.
Nicole Dryburg visited the Upper Lattimore Road girls' comprehensive on Monday to pick up a cheque for £2,500, raised by Year Ten pupils through events including a summer fair, towards her charity, the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Librarian Jan Lennon said: “Nicole, who is just 20 years old, has raised over £70,000 for various cancer charities, and has won many awards along the way.
“One of the awards she has won is Britain’s Most Inspiring Fundraiser and it was easy to see why.
“Nicole was diagnosed with cancer of the spine at the age of 11 and has been wheelchair-bound since then. Since then a brain haemorrhage has robbed her of her sight and more tumours have severely impaired her hearing, so that she now hears by words being spelled out in her hand.
“None of these difficulties has affected her bubbly personality or diminished her love of life.
“We were almost as excited as she was when she had tea with Prince Harry and visited Downing Street.”
More than half of pupils and staff have read Nicole's book the Way I See It, and they follow her life by reading her online journal.
