Harpenden event pulls in thousands

Nearly 3,000 drinkers visited last weekend's inaugural Harpenden Beer Festival, which the organisers are hoping to turn into an annual event.

With more than 2,800 enthusiasts flocking to the Eric Morecambe Memorial Hall on Friday and Saturday, all 7,200 pints of cask beer, and 1,000 pints of cider and perry, were sold by a team of volunteers organised by the South Hertfordshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale.

Spokesman John Bishop said:”‘We are simply delighted at the way this first festival was received by the Harpenden public. People of all ages came to try the different ranges of beers, and a great many festival-goers mentioned to staff how surprised they were to find so many varieties. We at CAMRA hope this success builds a stepping stone for next year, with the aim of showing more consumers the delights of British brewing.”
