ST ALBANS Mayor Chris Oxley is throwing his support behind the local scouting movement, calling for more volunteers for its “fantastic“ work.

Speaking at the Hertfordshire Scouts' annual general meeting at County Hall on Sunday, he said: “I wish to express my very deep appreciation of the work the Scouts do in our communities, as well as the leaders and the many parents and friends who assist in the fantastic work the movement does.

“In Hertfordshire alone there are over 2,000 unpaid leaders supporting and helping 11,628 young people. What pleases me even more is that numbers increased in 2008 by 7.4 per cent. Sadly there remains a waiting list of almost 2,000 young people.

“The theme of my mayoral year is Your Community - Our Community, and I wish to persuade more members of the public of all ages to volunteer to help in their local community.

“Volunteers are badly needed but their efforts are far outweighed by the rewards they gain in personal satisfaction.”
