Thousands of homes for Green Belt land around St Albans

DETAILS of where thousands of homes could be built on open Green Belt land around St Albans have been published by the district council.

The full local development strategy core strategy went on the authority's website this morning, revealing that up to 1,200 homes are earmarked for farmland to the south-west of the city, and about 900 to the south of Sandpit Lane.

Beaumont School's playing fields are earmarked for a further 150 and the authority proposes to meet its government targets through developing a number of urban sites, some of which, such as the former city centre college campus, are already under development, or, like the King Karry Lane playing fields, already have outline planning permission.

County council spokeswoman Nuala Milbourn, asked about the future of Beaumont School's playing fields, said: “Together with the London School for Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, we have put in a planning application to St Albans District Council which involves a land-swap between the two organisations.

“The land at Beaumont School is not very suitable for use as playing fields and through a swap with the adjacent London School land, the school could gain better playing fields and funds to build a sports hall.”
