A COUPLE from Harpenden will be taking to the skies for a parachute jump in aid of an African charity.

Aaron Wood and Katie Steed, who run an animation business named Slurpy Studios, will take a deep breath of fresh air next month to raise money for Harpenden Spotlight on Africa.

The charity links up with communities to support local initiatives and help alleviate poverty.

Aaron, 26, of Rothamsted Avenue, said: “At the networking event, the charity's treasurer stood up and half jokingly asked for people who were willing to jump out of a plane to raise money, at which point Katie and I stood up and said 'we will'.

“I have done it before when I was given a parachute jump as a present. It's terrifying. I know what to expect this time so I think I'll be more scared.

“Katie is nervous but she's a bit more of a daredevil than me.”

Harpenden Spotlight on Africa has in the past raised vital funding for the running of a new school in a Ugandan slum, which paid the salaries of teachers and the administrative costs of the school including food, educational materials, cleaning and transport.

He added: “This is the first thing we have done for the charity – which itself is a brilliant idea.

“Harpenden is an affluent area and its a brilliant idea to twin such a poor country with the town.”

The couple, who are members of the fundraising committee, aim to raise up to £2,000 by plunging into the skies on August 26 at the Cambridge Airfield. Anyone who would like to show their support and make a donation can visit www.harpendensoa.org.uk
