A SANDRIDGE resident who cares for his wife as well as tirelessly volunteering in the community has been nominated again in the Review's search for a local hero.

In June Ken Blackburn was put forward for a Community Gold award for his devotion towards the St Albans homeless shelter Open Door.

Mr Blackburn, of Giles Close, was nominated by the chairman of the charity who described his modesty and endless dedication to keeping Open Door active.

This month the 68-year-old has been recommended for the award by his long-standing friend Lord Anthony Clarke of Hampstead.

Lord Clarke told the Review: “I would want judges to know that Mr Blackburn has worked tirelessly for the multiple sclerosis (MS) society and his support for his church is also dedicated and very long standing.

“I can think of no one better to receive the award than Ken Blackburn, a true friend of the needy and vulnerable in our society.”

As well as volunteering for Open Door, Mr Blackburn finds the time to volunteer with the MS Society and is also president of the local St Vincent de Paul Society, a charity which is dedicated to tackling poverty.

Mr Blackburn, whose wife was diagnosed with MS in 1971, has told of his surprise at being nominated for a second time.

He said: “I am a little taken back at being nominated again, that people think so much about what I do. I am pleased.”

The Community Gold award scheme is run by the Review in conjunction with St Albans solicitors Debenhams Ottaway. Each month unsung heroes throughout the district are nominated and a winner is chosen.
