As the summer months draw to an end I find myself reflecting on what I have done in the past three months. The answer is quite a lot! I have been on holiday, to concerts, music festivals and have had various weekends away. It’s not been a bad summer at all for a cash-strapped student!
Despite this, I feel as though I have achieved absolutely nothing. I strangely look forward to finding myself in a lecture in the next few weeks starting the final year of my degree. Being at university gives me a purpose that I do not have at home.
When you are at university you know that you are building for your future, whereas at home you are just waiting to get back to continue with your journey.
I think the fact that this is my final year has made me more eager to return to my studies. I relish the challenge that lies ahead over the next twelve-months. And even more I look forward to entering the world of work at the end of my degree, whatever struggles that may bring.
This is not to say that the summer vacation has not been welcome. However, you do eventually tire of your monotonous part-time job (even if it does fund your eventful summer) and the fact that you lose some of your independence living back at home. Effectively, you are on a four-month break from building towards your future, and it is frustrating that there is little you can do about it until September rolls around.
I assume my eagerness to get back is a result of my anticipation for my final year. I am one whole year away from beginning a new chapter in my life, and as long as I turn my frustration into motivation, I simply cannot wait!
