DOZENS of musicians will be taking to the streets of St Albans to entertain crowds and raise money for local causes.

A live gig, dubbed St Albans Band Aid, will bring together musical talent from across the district in a bid to raise vital funds for national charity Macmillan Cancer Support and Grove House hospice in St Albans.

The event on Saturday, September 19, will kick off at 10.45am at the Clock Tower in French Row.

Spectators will be able to enjoy music from local rock band Denmark Street, as well as tribute acts Elvis Shmelvis and Elvince, the Cuban-themed Swanvesta Social Club, and Rat Pack-style singer Ricky Lopez.

From 2pm, the gig will move inside to the Garibaldi, Albert Street, where there will be more live music, along with a barbecue, raffle and disco.

Dene Rosewarn, of Westfields, St Albans, who is the lead singer of Denmark Street, set up the concert following the death of his 40-year old cousin, Cameron Richards, who lost his battle with bowel cancer last year.

He said: "Cancer affects all of us. It affected me last year through a couple of members of my family.

"I try and use my music to help out, so we get to play and we also get to make some money for a good cause out of it."

If the concert is a success, it is hoped that it will become an annual event.

Volunteers will be collecting donations throughout the day, which will be divided equally between the two charities.

Macmillan Cancer Support provides help for people suffering with cancer and their families, while the hospice in Waverley Road, offers specialist care to people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
