A SELFLESS charity volunteer has been crowned winner in the Review's search for unsung heroes across St Albans and Harpenden.

The Community Gold Award scheme, run in conjunction with local solicitors Debenhams Ottaway, aims to recognise the work done by residents in the district.

This month Sandridge resident Ken Blackburn, who has been twice nominated for the award, was chosen as the hero among other nominations.

The 68-year-old was first put forward by the chairman of the St Albans night shelter Open Door for his dedicated fundraising to keep the place active.

His “modest” personality got him a second nomination by long-standing friend Lord Anthony Clarke of Hampstead who described Mr Blackburn's willingness to put his all into supporting the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society.

Speaking of his delight at being crowned winner Mr Blackburn, of Giles Close, said: “I am rather surprised that I've won. I'm so chuffed because it's not something I expected at all, I'm so delighted.

“I think the scheme is a really good idea. It shows that somebody somewhere is doing some good.

“I just like to get on with the job so I wouldn't look for recognition, but being nominated was fantastic.”

Mr Blackburn's wife was diagnosed with MS in 1981 and has shared his devotion between caring for her needs and volunteering with Open Door and the MS Society.

However, Mr Blackburn told the Review today that after 16 years of raising funds for the Bricket Road homeless shelter, he is having to resign after recently being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

He added: “It's quite upsetting to have to leave after 16 years. I've seen so many people come and go and things are just about to get better with the refurbishment of the site.

“It's sad but it's been quite worthwhile seeing what you can give to people who need it the most.”
