TWO St Albans voluntary groups are each set to benefit from a £10,000 cash boost thanks to the National Lottery.
Both St Albans Centre for Voluntary Services (CVS) and St Albans Sea Cadets received the grant from the Big National Lottery Fund, but the money will be felt among the wider community. The one-stop shop for information in Catherine Street, which offers advice and support about volunteering, is looking to use the money to help 20 charities across the district.
St Albans Sea Cadets, whose members range between 11 and 18, will use the cash to revamp its dated facilities at Westminster Lodge in Holywell Hill, where they meet every Tuesday and Friday evening.
Brian Hewitt, the club's treasurer for 18 years, said: "It was excellent to receive the grant. We haven't received anything like this ever before and the money will make a real difference to improving the safety and sustainability of the place.
“The refurbishment will also bring the hall up to standards.”
Chief executive of the CVS Laura Cronshaw said: "The recession has ultimately created more opportunity for charities to attract skilled volunteers as people look to build their CV during this time.
“Our aim is to ensure sustainability in the voluntary sector during the economic slump through good governance and strengthening trustee boards.”
Community and voluntary sector groups, schools, health bodies and local authorities across the country are eligible for a cut in the £45 million Big Lottery Fund.
