A ST ALBANS man sent his girlfriend quite literally to cloud nine when he proposed to her as she prepared for a skydive, 35 feet above the ground.

Ashley Coughtrey asked his girlfriend JJ to marry him moments before she attempted an indoor skydive at the Airkix Centre in Milton Keynes.

As she hung suspended in mid-air, Ashley, 20, waited at the bottom and held up a placard that read: 'JJ will you marry me?'

Without hesitation, the blushing bride-to-be accepted, shouting from the air "Yes,yes, yes, I love you". The couple's happy moment was celebrated by onlookers.

Ashley said: "JJ's reaction to the banner was such a picture.

"Andy our instructor had to catch her from falling as both her hands flew to her mouth in surprise. She took the ring and said 'Yes, yes, yes, I love you!' Everyone was clapping."

The couple are now planning a traditional white wedding with a horse and carriage.
