'Inspirational' mum-of-two nominated for Community Gold Award

AN “inspirational” mother-of-two from St Albans has been nominated in the Review's search for a local hero.

Wendy Seabrook was nominated for a Community Gold Award by her younger sister Anita Wiffen in recognition of the many things she does for the community in which she lives.

Anita, 47, said her sister is always on the go either working for Elizabeth Arden in Boots, St Albans, fundraising for the charity Grove House and looking after their mother, as well as running Marshalswick Judo Club with her husband for the past 11 years.

She said: “She is really well known to almost everyone in St Albans. She is so hard-working, I have always looked up to her – she's an inspiration.

“When I was young she would always look after me. My mum had eight children so she was like a mum to me.”

Wendy, 53, who has two daughters and six grandchildren, always finds the time to fit in family around her work and social life.

Anita added: “She will work at Boots during the day and come home in the evening to get ready for the judo club. In between this she is holding charity events for Grove House and I never see her stop even fitting all this around her six grandchildren.

“Sometimes I worry about her.

“The lady who runs Grove House and other people who know Wendy are always telling me what a nice person she is. So many people know her.”

Wendy, of Windmill Avenue, St Albans, said: “I was so embarrassed when Anita told me about the nomination. She said I just don't realise how much I actually do.

“But although I might do a lot I don't do it for the glory, I do it because I love doing it and I have been for years.

“It is really nice to be recognised. I am busy and I am sure there are plenty of other people who are like myself.”

The Community Gold Award scheme is run in conjunction with St Albans solicitors Debenhams Ottaway.

I cannot think of a more worthy recipient of a gold award. Wendy is an outstanding Albanian and deserves the highest accolade for all her work in the community. I can well understand Wendy does not view what she does as work or out of the ordinary; being helpful, interested and considerate to others is her DNA and that is what makes her extra special.

At this moment, i am as Wendy's daughter about to burst with pride, but I feel that we have only touched the surfaces on my mum's achievements, her outstanding contributions for Marshalswick Judo Club, her hard work, loving nature towards the children of St Albans community is more than inspirational, equally my Mother is certainly a well respected woman of St Albans, I have never heard of my Mum utter a bad word about another human being and has helped me through some excruciatingly sad times in mine and her grandchildrens life- without her amazing support, love and wisdom, my children and I would not be who I am today,
Love you Mum, good luck, you are a hero in our eyes, well done Nanny, we love you. Without your strength, love and guidance we would be lost.
Your the best xxx

I have had the pleasure of working with Wendy for Elizabeth Arden on and off for 8 years. She is full of warmth, passion and energy. She knows so many people in St Albans and they always speak fondly about her.She treats every single customer as if they are her long lost friend which makes them feel special which they are to her. Although she has worked in Boots for a long time she is always coming up with fresh ideas to hit her targets. She is well known at head office for Elizabeth Arden as being dedicated to her job. Wendy has a great sense of humour ,she has many jokes and stories to share and we have spent many a day laughing.
If you need her no matter how busy (and believe me she is one busy lady) she will always have time for you.
I feel very lucky to have worked with her and she is a true friend to me.
