Panel debate for St Albans Abbey

A PANEL of national journalists and politicians will debate topical questions from Hertfordshire sixth-formers in St Albans Abbey next week.

Chaired by Guardian economics editor Larry Elliott, who lives in St Albans, the panel will include Jonathan Foyle, chief executive of the World Monuments Fund Britain, contributor to cultural television such as Channel 4’s Time Team, and Adam Rutherford, editor of the science journal Nature.

Two MPs, Labour's Emily Thornberry, who is a human rights lawyer and Shadow Secretary of State for Justice Dominic Grieve will join the event on Thursday morning.

Cathedral education officer Annette Cranston said: “The historic environment of the Norman abbey, with its legacy of education from the days of the Benedictine monastery, makes it an inspiring venue for debate and the quality of our speakers says much for the reputation that this event has generated.

“We look forward to a lively and stimulating morning with questions ranging from parliamentary democracy, heritage, the credit crunch and medical ethics.”

Almost 500 sixth-formers from schools across the county will attend the debate, which will be reported on by the Review.
