Discover how St Albans can grow its own food

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners will be looking into how St Albans could use more locally produced food in a public event on Saturday.

The event at Marlborough Road Methodist Church, dubbed a public workshop, has been organised by the pressure group Transition St Albans, which promotes individual and community environmental action.

Spokesman Richard Watson said: “Other Transition towns have already set up community-supported farms, community food gardens, orchard plantings and nut tree projects in the first steps on the path to relocalise food production and St Albans will be joining them shortly.

"We are already in discussions with a number of local bodies and expect to have some growing land available ready to kick off some projects early next year.

“Many shoppers are increasingly concerned about the impact of food miles and packaging on the environment.

“If more locally-grown food were available in St Albans people would snap it up but there are now few local producers in our area.

“This is an open workshop where people can explore the things that interest them - whether they would like to see a local city farm, are desperate for more allotments or just want more opportunities to learn the basics from more experienced food growers so that they can begin a vegetable patch in their own gardens.

“This is a chance for everyone to shape what the future of our community's approach to food looks like."

The event starts at 10.30am and will cost £4.
