Family of St Albans student speak of devastating crash

THE family of a St Albans student left with brain damage following a serious road crash, shattering his dreams of getting a university degree, have told of their month-long vigil by his bedside in hospital.

Adil Farooq, originally from Pakistan, was driving a red Renault Megane in Coopers Green Lane on Saturday, October 24, when he collided with a Honda CVR.

The 25-year-old, who lived with friends in Sutton Road, St Albans, came to study in London three years ago and was due to finish his information technology degree at the University of Hertfordshire in the coming year.

However following the horrific road smash Adil has been left hospitalised with brain damage, multiple fractures on his skull and loss of feeling in the left side of his body.

His aunt, Durdana Karim, told the Review how Adil's parents, who live in Pakistan, spent money to ensure their son gets a good education.

She, her husband and other family members have been going to the Royal Free Hospital in London for the last month to see Adil.

The 35-year-old said: “It has been a traumatic time for all of us. His parents are heartbroken and we are his only family here.

“Tomorrow is Eid which is meant to be a celebration but we will all be by his bedside in hospital.

“But he will never be the same 25-year-old that walked out of the door. We don't even know if he'll ever walk again.

“His parents paid a lot of money for him to get the education he wanted – which he will probably never be able to finish.”

Adil's family have praised Hertfordshire Constabulary and in particular PC Bob Hauxwell for his sensitive and thorough approach following the accident.

She added: “We want to highlight how good the police have been to us. When the family got to the scene the communication we had with PC Hauxwell was excellent.

“Also we hope the driver of the CVR is well. We can not blame him or put him at fault in anyway.

“With Christmas coming up and Eid for us we just want to thank everyone for their help.”

I hope he will get better soon and start playing cricket as he used to do.

Our thought and prayers are with his family and relative during this difficult time. Pray that Allah speeds his recovery. My heart goes out to his parents in Pakistan. Prayer and Faith can perform miracles. I hope the driver of the CVR is also ok. Makes me realise how dangerous the roads are and how life can change in a split second.
