THAWING snow might be a welcome sight for many, but it could also lead to flooding as well as icy conditions as water on the roads and pavements freezes overnight.
Stuart Pile, executive member for highways and transport, said: “We'll try to salting runs carefully so that salt doesn't get washed away by the rain. Following guidance from central government, we can only salt a reduced network of roads.
“We are continuing to liaise with the emergency services to look at parts of the network they consider to be critical and need treating. Please be very careful if you are out and about in the coming days.”
Hertfordshire Highways has been notified by EDF Energy that its priority for repairing electrical faults during the cold spell remains fixing domestic faults and it will not be able to make repairs to street lights.
Once the current icy temperatures improve, Hertfordshire Highways will have to examine the roads to see the extent of damage caused by the cold weather. Residents can report any faults on roads or pavements to us on 0300 123 4047.
Full information about the winter service is on the council’s website including advice to residents about driving safely, preparing cars for cold weather and clearing snow and ice.
