CONTROVERSIAL plans for a mosque in London Colney, facing strong opposition, will be back before a committee next week.

Councillors sitting on a planning committee have received a fresh application from the London Colney Islamic Centre to build a mosque in Barnet Road.

In November last year the proposal to use Cemex House by worshippers was refused by St Albans District Council.

Chairman of the Islamic Centre Fahim Karim expressed his disappointment - however there were conflicting views among local objectors.

About 180 people are opposed to the plans including the British National Party which was accused of inciting racial hatred after distributing “offensive” leaflets to homes in the village.

The new application requests temporary use of the building for three years and its car park will be situated in Lowbell Lane on land belonging to Cemex House.

The controversial proposals have sparked a long planning history, with the Islamic Centre battling since 2001 to find a home.
