Tesco abandons store plans for London Road

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has abandoned its plans to build a store in London Road.

The company will relocate its town centre store in St Peters Street in place of the former Woolworths site and has announced today that work will start early in the summer.

Tesco spokesman Nick Gellatly said: "We've been looking for the best way to improve the shopping trip for our St Albans customers for some time. Here we have an opportunity to almost double the sales area so that local people can get a great value weekly shop at Tesco in the city.

"We've taken this opportunity to look at the emerging local development framework too and to consider the future of our London Road site. I can confirm that we do not intend to submit a new application for a supermarket on this site.

"We've asked Spen Hill Developments Ltd, our subsidiary company, to look at alternative uses for the site and they will shortly begin discussions with the council. We will announce plans for the site in due course but they will not include a large store."

Well done the anti-Tesco campaigners. Every little helps.

I find it hard to feel relief or joy at the moment, only extreme anger that a company the size of Tesco’s has been able to blight and worry so many residents, twice weekly market stall holders, the farmers market people and retailers in the city centre, over such a large area of St Albans for so many years.

They are looking at alternative uses now – I wonder whether they will decide what that may be, with or before they talk to the council?

Perhaps they could build some 'Tesco Value' houses on them and sell them on to the local council...

Surely you could build quite a few flats for single mums on that site?
