Harpenden Rugby Club chairman pays tribute to a 'real community man'

A popular bar manager of a local chain who died suddenly in his Harpenden home on Monday morning has been described as a 'real community man'.

David Singleton, owner of Billys Bar and Restaurant in High Street, Harpenden, and Barneys in London Road, St Albans, died at his home in West Common in the early hours of Monday morning.

It is thought the 56-year-old Harpenden rugby coach and long-serving supporter of the club suffered a heart attack.

David coached the under 17s squad and a rugby squad at St George's School in Harpenden. His son Michael, 18, plays for Harpenden Rugby Club's first team while his youngest son, 14-year-old Jack, a St George's School pupil, is in the under 14 squad.

Paying tribute to his friend, Chairman of the club Jonathan Edwards said: "He was a very placid man - he would do anything for anybody. He'd forever support local schools and local charities. He provided equipment, organised things and gave up his time willingly. He was a real community man. It was a huge shock to the family and the club. The family are an integral part of the community. He'll be sadly missed."

David, a Manchester United Football Club supporter, also leaves behind his wife Jo.
