A PETITION, signed by nearly 500 Hatfield people opposed to a waste plant, has been presented to Hertfordshire County Council.
The authority's plans for an "energy through waste" plant, which critics say differs little from a crude incinerator, have provoked massive local opposition in the town, but the petition, presented by Lib Dem activist Nigel Quinton of Lemsford Village, opposes mass burning of domestic and commercial waste in general.
Mr Quinton told the waste management cabinet panel: "Mass burn incineration is yesterday’s technology, as many councils are beginning to realise.
"Incineration is not a green solution to waste management."
