Rush for new Tesco jobs in St Albans

A NEW Tesco Express store will be opening in Beech Road, St Albans, on Friday, after a flood of applications for the 17 jobs on offer.

More than 200 people applied for the 17 posts to work alongside five employees transferring from other branches.

Manager Toby Hanlon said: “The response was fantastic. With over ten people applying for each position, I feel we’ve recruited a great team of people and I’m looking forward to working with my new staff.

"We are delighted to be opening a Tesco Express store in St Albans and look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”

The store will mark its launch with a £500 donation to Heathlands School for deaf children. Pupils will be cutting a ribbon to declare the new store officially open at 10.30am on Friday.

Ah, yes - rush for new jobs.

Isn't this the paper that has spent acres of sheets printing quotes from people who think that having a Tesco in the town centre is a bad thing?

Bob S, I don't think the Review actually came out against the Tesco on London Road, they just reported on the campaign.

This new Tesco Express is a relatively small store, but despite the prize money giveaways, the charity donations and the 17 jobs, new supermarkets cause more problems than they create.

The supermarket's own trade body found that new stores destroy more local jobs than they create. Much of this is because the profits do not stay in the local area - they go to Tesco shareholders - unlike 'local' shops that are more likely to spend their profits in the area.

Of course a lot of local people will welcome the jobs and the new shop - if only planning laws be changed to make it a level playing field for independent retailers to get a fair go.

The only problem with this new store is that there is absolutely no where to park. Not so slight oversight! I'm sure Simon Grover will be cycling to it for his weekly shop but I'd rather not risk life and limb for food.

Wise words Mr Grover. I have an elderly relative in the area who can't drive nor cycle nor walk long distances. The buses in the area are a lottery and probably no fun on a cold winters day to wait for. For a parade of shops that had a golf, door and sewing shop, a new grocery shop is an absolute god send for her. From her point of view I can't see how this "causes more problems". As long as she can get her newspaper, milk and bread, all within easy walking distance, I don't think she'll be spending too many sleepless nights worrying where the profits go. And good on them for creating a few jobs in these tough times.
