A ST ALBANS man who has settled in New Zealand rescued a teenager badly injured in a mysterious attack on Sunday.

Former soldier Gary McNelly, who was brought up in St Albans but now lives in the town of West Auckland on North Island, was walking with his wife Claudine in a park when one of their three dogs found a 19-year-old man lying on the ground with blood pouring from his ears.

Mr McNally, worried about hypothermia, put his sweater round the assault victim and put him in the recovery position and kept him talking while he hovered on the verge of consciousness until paramedics arrived.

The victim has so far been unable to remember anything and police are baffled over the identity and motive of his assailant.
