A CANDLE left burning in a Hatfield flat sparked a blaze this afternoon.
Two crews , one from Hatfield and another from Welwyn Garden City, were called to Talbot Road just after noon.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus gained entry through the front door of the second floor flat which was submerged in smoke.
Watch Commander Dave Hunt, at Hatfield fire station, said the occupants were not in but had left the candle alight on the window sill.
It is believed the flame caught onto the curtain which sparked a fire.
Commander Hunt warned that candles are dangerous when they are used near curtains or without holders.
He added that the flat had been previously visited by the crew who had carried out a free fire safety check and offered the owners advice.
