CAMPAIGNERS opposing development plans for Hertfordshire House in the centre of St Albans can breathe a temporary sigh of relief as the appeal is withdrawn.
A public inquiry to determine the controversial plans, submitted by Antringham Verulamium and Travelodge, was set for April 20 after St Albans Council refused one of the initial bids in August last year.
However it has emerged the developers, who are determined to build an 87-bed hotel, 46 flats and units for Hertfordshire Constabulary and the Primary Care Trust in replace of the dilapidated block in Civic Close, have withdrawn the appeal – and subsequently the planning inquiry has been cancelled.
Peter Trevelyan of the St Albans Civic Society said he is pleased to hear the application has been withdrawn for now but remains cautious for the plans making a return.
