Roma Mills: "Switch off the lights in St Albans"

LABOUR Parliamentary candidate for St Albans Roma Mills has urged people in St Albans to fight climate change by switching off their lights at 8.30pm for one hour on Saturday.

Organised by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour won widespread support across the world in 2009.

Councillor Millls said: "It would be great if the people of St Albans joined in this global action.

"We all need to make our voices heard to protect our planet and to make sure this is a good chance to do this alongside people from all over the world.”

Earth Hour will be supported by Carluccios restaurant in Cristopher Place, which will replace electric lighting with candles.

We'll have no choice but to in a few years!

The Government have failed to get a grip on the impending energy crisis!

Another pointless gimmick from the Labour Party.

Maybe they should turn the lights off when they leave No.10 in a few weeks...

I am surprised that you two tory landowners are against anything which preserves the worlds wildlife .

Come on boys , the hounds will need a bit of sport and you will have good reason to have a moan in the future if there are less chances for a good shoot .
Its only one hour and you can always look forward to that good chap Dave scraping the beastly hunting ban . Tally Ho !

Stupid tokenism!

What a joke! I can't believe any adult person is actually going to go along with this pathetic idea which is nothing more than the usual politician's attention seeking. It makes me feel like lighting every lamp in the house as protest, maybe even investing in a load of fairy lights and stringing them up on the outside of the house! What a load of pants! I'd laugh if it wasn't so pathetic!

Would that be the house in London Colney or the one in Beaconsfield ?

I thought the Labour Party switched out all the lights when they allowed the EU to ban normal lightbulbs. Typical Roma - no policy just gimmicks!!

No not a gimmick - an international World Wildlife Fund campaign which was supported by over 3,000 towns and cities in 83 different countries last year. I am sure that there are people in St Albans who will want to support it.

Haven't you got anything more important to be doing for the community Roma?

If your so genuinely concerned about our surroundings, why not start on something that will keep your public happy.

Get the bloody road surfaces sorted for a start...

If it's a World Wildlife Fund campaign then why don't you let them get on with it instead of jumping on their bandwagon, Roma? People would have more respect for politicians like you if you concentrated on things they desperately need help with NOW, e.g. stripping First Capital Connect of their franchise and getting the train to run properly - but I suppose that's not trendy and headline grabbing enough for you, is it? There may be people in St Albans who want to support the WWF's campaign (THEIR campaign, NOT yours Roma) but people here and RIGHT NOW are telling you this is NOT a priority to them so why aren't you listening? I suppose like most politicians you *know* you know what's best, eh? SICKENING!

The worring thing is that Roma Mills doesn't seem to understand the meaning of the word gimmick...

Now if she was to propose, say, a general reduction in the amount of street lighting / length of time it is all fully lit per night, in order to reduce usage, resources, costs, etc. that would be worth discussing.

Instead she prefers an hour long gimmick = publicity stunt = attention grabbing event, etc.

For political attention seeking there is nothing to compare with the outrageous spam mail newspaper at present being posted throughout St Albans District by the lib dems .

Whilst purporting to report fairly , in reallity it is nothing more than a gaudy attempt to mislead the voter .

Far from being the prospective champion of change in the local political scene , Sandy Wallingford is remembered by those who knew him as a past useless district councellor who wasted St Albans
council taxpayers money on what they call Wallingfords folly .

Hi TonyL - I presume by Wallingford's folly you mean Walkington. But I am intrigued by this folly. Can you enlighten us?
BTW - to other readers although I am not Labour oriented, I think Roma has a point with regard the lights. If we all save 10% energy then it has to help.
