Highways bosses have agreed to change the phasing of traffic lights at St Albans' busiest junction.
After lobbying from John Stocker, St Albans UKIP Parliamentary candidate, Hertfordshire Highways has promised that both sets of lights controlling traffic passing from Verulam Road into London Road at the Peahen junction will turn green together.
Mr Stocker said: "At the moment, quite often the main lights are green but traffic can't pass because the lights controlling the pedestrian crossing are red.
"This causes a lot of unnecessary congestion - people have been talking about trying to get it changed for a couple of years.
"The phasing of the traffic signals will be changed in the next two to three weeks.
"This should immediately ease the long traffic queues along Verulam Road that have blighted the junction for years.
"Once this is seen to be working we will continue the campaign for better phasing of the other city centre traffic lights."
