District council responds to campaigners' comments over Westminster Lodge

THE head of culture at the district council has hit out at campaigners who claim that the Westminster Lodge development is a “done deal”.

The St Albans Civic Society has branded a council leaflet - Investing in Leisure – misleading because it states the new centre, which has not yet been granted planning permission, has been given the go-ahead.

Richard Shwe, head of culture and community development at the district council, said: “The headline New Westminster Lodge Gets the Go-Ahead in our Investing in Leisure newsletter is not misleading.

“It refers to the decision by cabinet for St Albans City and District Council to give the green light to plans for a new leisure centre, a fact which is clearly stated in the first paragraph of the story.

“Further down in the story it is also clearly stated that the design will form the basis of a planning application to be submitted to the local planning authority and that construction work is subject to planning approval.”

As we all know with time pressures on everyone today, we do not always read every word written, but take a general impression from an article.

We are paying about £1/2m a year now for a communications department within the council so it should not be too surprising to see this aspect of ‘spin’ in operation.

It would seem to me that the piece referred to above was clearly written to give the impression that the Westminster Lodge proposals was a done deal; which has been the general message from officers and portfolio holder for many months.

There is a growing army of residents who object to their council not listening to their concerns over the proposals and seemingly acting in a very autocratic not democratic way!

So the spelling misprint officer gets sent out to clarify the "misleading impression", not the spineless councillors and wannabe MP who will exploit the new leisure centre plans in their election propaganda.
