THE hospital team which ensures surgical instruments at Welwyn Garden City's QEII are clean and sterile has won recognition for its efforts.
The East and North Herts Hospitals Trust's sterile services team, based at the Lister in Stevenage but covering both buildings, was named best team at an annual awards ceremomy on Friday.
Chief executive Nick Carver said: "The sterile services team stood out not just because of the quality of the service they provide to their clinical colleagues today, but because of just how they have improved over recent years.
“The team is based at the Lister since being brought together in an expanded unit at the hospital back in 2006. Initially this change did not go anything like as well as had been planned.
"Thanks to the team’s dedication and hard work, today the service has been transformed.
"The team’s members have achieved a quality of service of which they – and the trust – are justifiably proud.
"Such is the quality of the team’s service that a recent external assessment could not find one single area on which it could make a recommendation for change."
When the QEII and Lister teams were merged in 2006, numerous operations were cancelled because the correct equipment had not been prepared for surgeons, but the problem has now been virtually eliminated.
Other winners included the renal home dialysis team and Lorane Fitch, in charge of infection control.
