A NEW development of affordable homes on a former Welwyn Garden City allotment site was officially opened last week.
The Knella Road project is funded by a £960,000 grant from the Homes and Communities Agency and is being delivered through a partnership between Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Affinity Sutton on behalf of William Sutton Homes.
The 24 properties will be let from the council's housing register and a shortlist of tenants has already been drawn up from more than 200 bids.
The development comprises of eight two bedroom flats, one wheelchair adapted four bedroom house, nine three bedroom and six two bedroom houses.
Councillor Roger Trigg, executive member for housing at the borough council, said: “This is a great development for the borough, giving a new lease of life to an unused site.
“The properties will provide a high level of energy-saving housing, help meet the high local demand for housing and provide important investment in conserving the surrounding area.”
Affinity Sutton will own and manage the properties and as part of the project the company has pledged to make £75,000 worth of improvements to Herns Wood - a small wooded area adjacent to the site.
Kerry Kyriacou, director of new business and development at Affinity Sutton, said: “We are delighted to be working with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council in building much needed new affordable homes.”
