St Albans pothole costs landlord £650

THE owner of a St Albans pub has been left £650 out of pocket after his car wheel was damaged by a deep pothole.

John McGowan, of Leverstock Green, who owns The Great Northern in London Road, damaged the wheel of his car just outside his pub last month.

He asked the county council for compensation, but was outraged when the authority's insurance company refused to pay up.

He said: "They said it was not the council's fault but an act of God.

"But I am £650 out of pocket when it certainly wasn't my fault.

"The very day after the letter arrived, the hole was filled in."

Stick at it John. The council tried to fob off my Father-in-law but paid up when he reminded them of their responsibilities and eventually paid up.

Useful for a publican to be able to say "Sorry mate, Act of God" if anyone complains about the quality of his beer or being short-changed. That's known as turning a negative into a positive.

I gave up making a claim after being passed from pillar to post with HCC. You would write a letter which they 'never receive', things like that.. They basically made it as long winded and difficult to do I couldn't be bothered to make a claim for my tyre, and I just swallowed the cost.

Im sure they rely on this to get out of paying people. It's disgusting.
