After he got out of his car at about 9.40am, he was surprised by the gang, and robbed of a bag containing about 450 rings.

Detective Sergeant Nina Winfield said: “When the man got out of his car at the junction with Park Street Lane and Gidian Court, one of the offenders – described as being of Eastern European appearance, 5ft 8ins tall, aged between 30 and 35 – hit him in the face and stole his black sports holdall containing the rings.”

She added: “Fortunately the man was not seriously injured but understandably shaken by the robbery.

“We would like to speak to anyone who was in Beaconsfield Road in Hatfield or the Gidian Court area of Park Street yesterday morning and saw something suspicious.”

All four men were dressed in jeans and jackets and one was also wearing a red and yellow bandana.

DS Winfield added: “Did you see the men or the car prior, during or after the robbery? What direction did they go in after the Tippendell Lane junction?

“This is a very unusual incident and I'd like to reassure residents that we are doing everything we can to trace these men.”

The company the rings were from specialises in wedding and special occasion rings and the bags contained about 450 rings, including some in white gold, yellow gold and diamonds.
