St Albans students show off their business skills

A GROUP of budding entrepreneurs have managed to raise more than £2,000 for charity using their money-making skills.

A team of three students from St Columba's College in St Albans were started off with £100 with the aim to make as much cash out of it as possible.

Named Dragons' Apprentice, each group chose a charity to support and came up with innovative and creative ideas to make cash.

The 'Dragons' consisted of local firms Deloitte, Serena Software and Premier Foods – each of which were allocated a team which advised them on how to make their money grow.

Home-Start, Herts Young Homeless Project and St Albans Volunteer Centre were the three charities which have all taken a cut of the £2,445 which has been raised by the business-minded youngsters.

At an awards evening on March 17 the Mayor of St Albans Councillor Chris Oxley announced how much was raised and each team reported back on their experiences.

David Buxton, headteacher at the school in King Harry Lane, praised his pupils and their teacher Dave Gaze for their achievement saying “the experience has taught the boys about dealing with business people, forming plans and seeing them through.”

He encouraged other schools to get involved and anyone interested in signing up for Dragons' Apprentice 2011 can contact Michelle or Wendy at the St Albans Centre of Voluntary Service on 01727 852657.
