St Albans firefighters' charity effort

FIREFIGHTERS are washing cars in St Albans for charity today.

Using a high pressure hose at to get the dirtiest cars brought to the London Road fire station gleaming in minutes, they are asking for donations for colleagues injured on duty, and are splitting the proceeds with a project to teach rugby in Rwanda.

Darren Ead, of Valley Road, St Albans, who plays rugby alongside firefighter Tom Bachman at Old Albanians, said: "A group of us have gone out to Rwanda twice before, and are planning our third trip, to a place called Bitterama, in May.

"Unfortunately Rwandans are divided between the Hutus and the Tutsis. Not long ago there was terrible violence and lots of people were killed or chased from their homes.

"We hope we can bring people together through rugby."

Tom said: "We've had quite a few people already this morning, but the weather isn't helping.

"We will be carrying on until 3pm. Hopefully the weather will improve and we will get more people this afternoon."
