City tops real ale poll

ALE experts have hailed St Albans as the best place to buy a pint of beer.

Cask Marque inspectors tested more than 19,000 pints of cask-conditioned ale in towns and cities across the country before ranking St Albans as the favourite.

Beers were judged on these criteria: temperature, appearance, aroma and taste.

Inspectors marked the beers out of 20, with pubs in St Albans, home of the Campaign for Real Ale, scoring an average of 19.7.

Eighty-five per cent of beers in the city's pubs scored full marks.

Casque Marque director Paul Nunny said: "The results show some truly outstanding standards and a real commitment to promoting beer quality from publicans."

l The top ten towns for beer were: 1 St Albans; 2 Plymouth; 3 Truro; 4 Taunton; 5 Huddersfield; 6 Portsmouth; 7 Bristol; 8 Hemel Hempstead; 9 Bradford; 10 Guildford.
