A TRAINING centre for teachers has been opened at Verulam School in a former teacher's house renovated at a cost of £150,000.
The centre in a building by the front gate of the Brampton Road boys' comprehensive was opened in a short ceremony by County Councillor Chris White on Monday last week.
He said: "There is more to life than just classrooms.
"That people learn in more than just the traditional ways is recognised in this building."
The house, once lived in by members of staff and more recently a music room, was empty when headteacher David Kellaway started at the school a year ago.
He and deputy head Mike Harpham have driven through the project to convert it into a training centre, in co-operation with the employment service Connexions, which will offer careers advice there to both students and the general public.
Staff development is a priority for Mr Kellaway, who likes to encourage his teachers to swap experiences and ideas.
