FINE wine and a taste of Haitian cooking were among the things attracting hundreds of people to a Radlett farm today (Saturday) for a miniature festival in aid of Unicef.
Battlers Green Farm, in Common Lane, opened its gates to the public as shops put on a range of culinary treats and activities to help the earthquake victims of Haiti.
In the first event of its kind at the farm, the organisers brought together businesses, as well as a live jazz band, to hold a “charitable and community building experience”.
One of the organisers, Sandra Sanglin, said: “It is has been a great occasion. People have been bringing their children and families and everyone here has provided something different.”
People milled around in the sunshine with the opportunity to take part in the customary raffle, enjoy the food and drink and even have a tarot card reading.
The combined target was £2,000 and wine tasting expert Jez Grice kicked off proceedings by raising more than £800 on Friday evening where people paid for a tutorial on Chilean wines.
He said: “It is really good for people to come and experience. It is making everyone more lively.”
Members of the 4th Radlett Scouts also chipped in, walking around with collection tins to boost the day's takings.
Music was put on by Sparky's Latin All Stars, playing live in the courtyard, while behind them, cooking demonstrator Pam Cruse was treating visitors to a piece of authentic Haitian cooking and a rum punch.
She said: “I have spent the last three days or so testing the recipes and making sure they are absolutely correct. It is a way for people to get more of a feel for the cause we are helping today.
“It is just an amazing culture and why not enjoy it while we raise the money.”
