A group of students aged between six and 14 were put through a testing three-hour grading session at Wood End Primary School in Yeoman's Avenue.
Instructor Nigel Smart, who teaches after-school clubs at several Hertfordshire schools including Wood End and St Michael's in St Albans, said: "It was a a fun, informative and entertaining morning.
"The Hertfordshire Karate Centre is part of the Goju Kai Karate Federation who specialise in teaching the traditional Japanese martial art of Goju Ryu.
"If you would like to take up karate or return to martial arts I am opening a junior and adult club in Harpenden in September and also running a junior taster workshop in August."
