Commuters face travel chaos as London Underground strikes planned by CMT and NSSA

Thousands of commuters face travel chaos on London's tube system next week as two of the rail network's largest trade unions plan to strike.

The action comes after a dispute with London Underground Limited over proposals to cut 800 jobs from the transport network.

The strike, called by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA), is due to take place from 9pm Monday, September 6, until 9pm Tuesday, September 7.

If the planned walkout goes ahead, commuters face severe travel disruption on the week that children across the capital start the new school term.

A statement on the TSSA website reads: “London Underground still refuse to talk sensibly to TSSA and RMT over OSP and the impact of the cuts.

“We have called for a total and indefinite ban on all forms of overtime from midnight on Monday 06 September 2010.

“If LUL don’t want to employ enough staff to run a proper service then we will not cover up for their stupidity by working overtime. Let them sort out the mess.”

RMT has more than 80,000 members, while TSSA has more than 30,000, though not all of those work for London Underground.
